Chapter Eighteen

Barney stared at the woman wrapped in his arms. He’d claimed his mate, made her his, and now the consequences would be his as well to deal with. Her scent was all over his skin, her essence inside him, her mark there for all to see. There was no way he could keep her out of sight. Anyone who looked at him would know he was a mated man, and her scent could easily be tracked right back to Halle.

So. How did he keep her safe? He could leave her here, assign Artemis or Apollonia to guard her, and head back to Arizona.

“Don’t even think about it.”

Barney started. “What?”

She stirred, and it was then that he realized she was staring right back at him. He’d been so completely caught up in his own thoughts he hadn’t seen her awaken. “Whatever it was that had you scowling so fiercely.”

“That would be your safety, little Hobbit.”

She whined in the back of her throat. “That again?”

“Now that you’re out of the hospital I need to go back to Arizona.” There was no way around it. Casey Lee and Derrick were getting the run-around wherever they went. They needed him if they were going to get any further with the case.

“Oh.” She pushed up on one elbow. “I could stay with my parents and have Ryan take me back and forth to work with him.”

He’d thought she’d put up more of a fight. “You’re okay with this?”

“Nope, but we don’t have a choice.” Heather pressed a kiss to his chest. “It’s your job. Just like inking male behinds is mine.” She winked at him as she reminded him of their lunchtime conversation and how little he’d liked hearing about her client that day. Had that only been a couple of weeks ago?

“I was thinking of asking Artemis to keep an eye on you.” If anyone could protect her it would be the white Tiger. He doubted even Apollonia stood a chance against Artemis if he got serious.

She bit her lip. “I don’t want to be separated from you.”

“I know.” He cupped the back of her head. “The last thing I want is to be away from you. But it’s the life of a Hunter. I take out the bad guys, and sometimes that means leaving home for a while.”

“I could come with you.” She traced the edges of his nipple with her nail. “I could stay in the hotel while you work.”

“Hell no.” He stopped her roaming hand before he became too distracted. “You’re not getting anywhere near this.”

“Barney—”

“No.” Just the thought of her anywhere near the Senate gave him hives. “If you’re there, all I’ll be able to think about is you. I need to know you’re here and safe, or I’ll get my ass killed.”

“I know.” She put her head back on his chest with a pout. “It’s just…I don’t want to be away from you yet.”

“We both knew I’d have to go back.” He didn’t like it any more than
